Norma Jean Acker
Norma Jean Acker became a Michigan Virtual School online instructor in 2007. She is a member of the English department and is certified to teach English and social science.

Gwen Alim-Young
Gwen Alim-Young became a Michigan Virtual School online instructor in 2003, and has led two course development teams. She is a multidisciplinary educator with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a curriculum emphasis. Gwen also teaches at Grand Ledge High School, and serves on the Grand Ledge Educational Foundation. She enjoys spending time with family and friends in her spare time.

Amy Anderson
Amy Anderson teaches German at Michigan Virtual School and Montcalm Community College. She started learning German as a high school freshman when she babysat for an Austrian family in her neighborhood. She won a scholarship in high school to travel to Germany through the American Association of Teachers of German. Amy pursued German as a major at Hope College in Holland, and traveled to Vienna, Austria, for the Vienna Summer School Program. She spent a year interning and studying in Germany under the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship from 2002-2003. After completing teacher certification at Grand Valley State University, Amy achieved advanced German proficiency on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

Ben Ashby

Michelle Bauman
Michelle Bauman, Music Education Specialist, has been with MVS since the launch of its first music course in 2007. She has taught music in the Southwest Michigan area for over 25 years and for the last nine years has served as the Choral Director for the Kalamazoo Valley Community Chorus. She also has served as a national music consultant for McGraw-Hill Educational Publishers and has been a curriculum reviewer and creator of new and existing music curriculum. Michelle earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Spring Arbor University and Master of Arts from VanderCook College of Music.

Tara Becker-Utess
Tara Becker-Utess has been teaching at Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She teaches Personal Finance, Math Skills, Legal Issues and Pre-Algebra. Tara is also in her fifth year of teaching social studies and mathematics at Charlotte High School. She coaches junior varsity volleyball and runs the Harvard Model Congress and Freshmen Mentoring Program. Tara graduated from Western Michigan University in 2005 with a degree in Secondary Education. Tara completed her master’s at Michigan State University in Curriculum and Teaching and is now at WMU working on her Administrative Certificate.

Carlin Borsheim
Carlin Borsheim has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2009. She teaches English 9A and 9B. In addition to teaching at MVS, Carlin teaches teacher education courses at Michigan State University. She has seven years of experience as a teacher of English, drama and creative writing in high schools in Michigan and Ohio.

Bridgette Botten
Bridgette Botten has been teaching Chemistry at Michigan Virtual School since 2009. She is in her eighth year of teaching at the secondary level, including all areas of science, special education and co-teaching. In addition, she is a graduate adjunct professor in special education at Madonna University. She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Master of Arts in Teaching and an Education Specialist in Learning Disabilities.

Mary Bullard
Reading has been a life-long passion for Mary Bullard. She has taught Reading and Study Skills at Michigan Virtual School since 2000. She began her career as a Young Adult Librarian in a public library. Mary now works part-time at a local community college as Reference Librarian and Special Needs tutor. For the past 14 years she has been the Library Media Specialist at a large high school in southeast Michigan. She earned her undergraduate degree and teaching credentials at Alma College. Mary has a Master of Library Science degree from University of Michigan and a Master of Reading from Eastern Michigan University. She has also taken technology classes from Michigan State University.

Kristi Bush
Kristi Bush has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2000. Kristi serves as an online instructor trainer, course developer and mentor. Apart from MVS, Kristi is in her third year as the K-12 Media Specialist for Shepherd Public Schools, for which Kristi earned a master’s degree from Central Michigan University. Prior to serving in this position, Kristi taught English for 12 years at Shepherd High School. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Northern Michigan University.

Sandra Cade
Born in Chicago, Sandra Cade has lived and traveled extensively in the U.S., as well as parts of Europe and Latin America. On most of her international trips she accompanied teenagers on their first experiences of a world beyond the boundaries of their home communities. Synchronous class sessions among advanced language students from across Michigan provide opportunities for conversations in a shared new language about topics raised in course readings, audiocasts, and videos. “Listening to and encouraging the growth of ideas is very exciting and being able to chat virtually with my students from the comfort of our own homes is a special treat,” Sandra says.

Tina Chambers
Tina Chambers has taught English, Psychology and AP Psychology since starting with Michigan Virtual School. She began her career in the classroom in 1994 teaching high school English. After earning a master’s degree in counseling, she worked as a high school counselor for eight years. Currently, she not only teaches for MVS, but also serves as a middle school administrator and has an Education Specialist in Leadership degree.

Theresa Daly Commean
Theresa Daly Commean started teaching at Michigan Virtual School in 2009. She graduated from Trinity University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management and went on to become an interpreter for the deaf. She received her master’s degree in Education at Stetson University in 2007. Theresa began the American Sign Language program at Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, in 2000 and has been teaching at Seminole for the past 10 years. She is currently teaching American Sign Language 1A and 1B for MVS.

Julie Crossman
Julie Crossman teaches Introduction to Forensic Science and Advanced Forensic Science online for MVS. She is also a high school science teacher at Charlotte High School. Julie holds a professional teaching certificate for all science content and earned her undergraduate teaching degree from Western Michigan University and a master’s degree in Natural Science from Michigan State University. Julie enjoys teaching students from across the state online.

Diane Culter
Diane Culter has been teaching at MVS since 2007. She believes that with MVS, students become acquainted with the educational styles of the future. Diane teaches Art, Computer Graphics, Yearbook and English Language Arts at Superior Central School in Eben Junction, Michigan. Her education includes an associate degree in Fine Arts, with a minor in Spanish, from St. Clair County Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Education, majoring in Illustration, with a minor in English Language Arts, from Northern Michigan University, and a master’s degree in Computer Graphics and Instruction from Ferris State University.

Louise DeTolve
Louise (Lee) DeTolve has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2002. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Education from University of Illinois and a Master of Arts in Educational Technology Curriculum from Governors State University. Originally a member of the math department, Lee currently teaches Digital Photography Editing and Flash Animation. Prior to joining Michigan Virtual School’s staff, Lee taught geometry and was a technology coordinator in Kalamazoo. Before moving to Michigan in 1994, she taught advanced middle school mathematics in Illinois.

Jamie DeWitt
Jamie DeWitt has been a teacher with Michigan Virtual School since 2007. Jamie currently teaches AP Probability and Statistics, but has also been an instructor for MME Probability and Statistics, 6th-grade math and MVS Summer Math Camp. She is also a mathematics instructor at a high school in the Lansing area. Jamie earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Aquinas College in 2005. In 2010, she received a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Michigan State University.

Lanny DeWitt
Lanny DeWitt has been a faculty member of Michigan Virtual School since 2009 and enjoys teaching online classes. He has taught for 32 years and is currently Social Studies Department Chairman at Muskegon Heights Senior High School. He teaches U.S. History, Government and Economics. Lanny graduated from Cornerstone University, Calvin College and Pensacola Christian College (master’s degree). He also earned a doctorate in Educational Leadership through the University of Phoenix. Originally from Holland, Michigan, Lanny and his wife have been married for over 38 years, have four children and six grandchildren.

Annette Gleason
Annette Gleason has taught math for four years at Gwinn High School. A few years ago she decided to become a stay-at-home mom but still coaches junior varsity volleyball at Gwinn. Annette loves being outside in the summer so she walks the Lake Superior shoreline, hikes large bluffs and plays softball. Most of her spare time is spent with her husband three children in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Shannon Hancock
Shannon Hancock lives in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she teaches in a face-to-face classroom at a small school. Shannon has taught in a regular classroom, a prison, and at Northern Michigan University. Shannon loves teaching and loves being able to connect with students across the state by teaching online classes. She think that the opportunities online learning brings to our students are endless. Shannon is married and has three children, one boy and two girls.

Elaine Hill
Elaine Hill, middle school science instructor, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2005, teaching all levels and disciplines of middle school science as well as developing classes. She was also an instructor for MVS summer and after-school online Science Camps. Elaine attended Space Camp for Teachers at Cape Canaveral, Florida, which helped her gain an insight into astronaut training. She received her degree from Western Michigan University and has highly-qualified status in the teaching of science. Elaine brings to MVS over 30 years of experience teaching science to middle school students both online and in face-to-face classrooms.

J.R. Hill
J.R. Hill has been a mathematics instructor with Michigan Virtual School since 2004. He currently teaches Algebra 1 and Mathematics of Baseball. In the past J.R. has taught Algebra 2, Geometry, Math Skills, Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry. He has also served as the mathematics department head and helped develop many math online courses. J.R currently works at Clinton Middle School teaching seventh-grade math. He also teaches two engineering courses at Clinton Middle School through Project Lead the Way. J.R. has also coached varsity basketball, junior varsity baseball and varsity baseball. Prior to coaching high school, he was a college baseball coach with Siena Heights University, where he played four years of college baseball. J.R. has also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Lymphoma and Leukemia Society and Catholic Social Services. He is married and has three children.

John Hill
John Hill, high school history instructor, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2002, developing and teaching American History and Native-American History classes. John holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary social studies from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in history from Oakland University. In addition to teaching American and World History in a face-to-face classroom, he was involved in coaching high school and middle school sports such as basketball, baseball and football for a number of years. John has also worked as an Industrial Engineer for General Motors Corporation where he developed and taught classes at GM Plants worldwide for General Motors University.

Jennifer Hoffman
Jennifer Hoffman is a Spanish instructor for Michigan Virtual School. In addition to teaching for MVS, she teaches elementary Spanish in a face-to-face school. She has studied in Finland, Germany, Spain and Chile and has a Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University and a Master of Arts in Education (TESOL) from Grand Valley State University. Jennifer very much enjoys technology and believes that online learning together with world language instruction will help our students contribute to the global community.

Nancy Jayne
Nancy Jayne has been teaching and designing courses with Michigan Virtual School since 2005. She has taught Statistics, AP Statistics, Health Education A, Health Education B and Health Education MMC. Outside of cyberspace, Nancy had taught mathematics for four years prior to earning her master’s degree in School Counseling and moving into her current position as the counselor for a high school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Chris Kaiser
Chris Kaiser, instructor, course developer and chairperson of the social studies department, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2001 and was among the first cohort of online instructors. He currently teaches World Civilizations, World History and Geography, and Advanced Placement U.S. History. A veteran public school teacher of over 11 years, Chris earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Michigan State University, a master’s in Education from Aquinas College and is currently a doctoral student at Michigan State University with research interests in global education, the teaching and learning of history, and pre-service teacher education.

Sue Kanitz has been teaching French with Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She is also a veteran staff member of Milan High School, where she has taught French and English for the past 25 years. Along with her teaching duties, Sue has been the school’s Student Council adviser for several years, has served as department chair and has accompanied students to Europe on several occasions. Sue earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Eastern Michigan University.

Andrea Kistler
“Guten Tag!” Andrea Kistler, also known as “Frau” Kistler in her German courses, has been teaching both German and Spanish for Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She has taught German and Spanish at Gladwin Community Schools since 1998. Prior to beginning her teaching career, Andrea lived in Germany for three years. Andrea graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts in German, Spanish and Marketing, and later earned a secondary teaching certificate from Saginaw Valley State University. She recently completed a Master of Science degree in in International Relations from Troy University and holds a certificate in Distance Education from Indiana University. Andrea is originally from Mt. Pleasant, but currently lives in Gladwin with my husband, son and daughter, as well as three dogs.

Amy Kotsch
Amy Kotsch, English and business education instructor, as been a Michigan-certified 7-12 educator since 1996 and a Michigan Virtual School instructor since 2003. She is the lead instructor for English 10A, English 10B and Beginning Composition courses, and a second section instructor for Employability Skills. In addition to being a member of the MVS team, Amy teaches English and computer courses at a small school in Michigan’s Thumb. Amy graduated from Central Michigan University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in English, Business Education, and Recreation. In 2002 she earned a master’s degree in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University.

Jim Koyish
Jim Koyish has been involved with the Michigan Virtual School since 2002. While an adjunct online instructor, he has also taught in the face-to-face classroom in the Belding, Grant, Fremont and Holton school districts in West Michigan. Prior to working as a full-time K-12 educator, Jim was a supervisor and manager in the automotive, furniture and food processing industry. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, a Master of Arts in Career & Technical Education, and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology from Western Michigan University. He earned his Secondary Professional Teaching endorsements in IX Industrial Technology and English.

Christine Ladner
Christine Ladner has taught Japanese at Michigan Virtual School since the course’s inception in 2008. Prior to teaching, she managed a translation company and worked in web and graphics fields in England, Germany and the U.S. Christine graduated from Baylor University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Political Science and did an exchange program in Japan for one year. In 1998 she earned her master’s degree in Journalism and Japanese from the University of Michigan and her Teaching Certification in Japanese Language and Political Science from Eastern Michigan University. She has taught Japanese at the K-12 level, both face to face and online.

Debra Lynch
Debra Lynch joined Michigan Virtual University in January 2010. For the past 25 years, she has taught Business and Technology courses at the high school level and serves as the Work Based Learning Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree from Central Michigan University. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Baker College teaching in the Business and Office Administration Department. Debra lives with her husband, Jeff, and has two kids who attend Central Michigan University. She enjoys reading, traveling, scrapbooking and spending the summers up north with her family.

Joshua Males
Joshua Males has been teaching high school mathematics for 10 years. He has taught in the United Kingdom, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Michigan. Joshua currently teaches at Mason High School. Joshua did his undergraduate work at South Dakota State University and has master’s degrees from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and George Washington University.

Patricia Maldonado
Patricia Maldonado’s involvement with Michigan Virtual School began in 2009. She currently teaches the Fast Track credit recovery Biology/Earth Science/Forensic Science courses and AP Biology. Prior to working with MVS, Patricia taught Earth Science for 11 years at Gardner Junior High and AP Environmental/Biology for 22 years at Eastern High School in Lansing. After retiring from the Lansing Public Schools, she took a position as a field instructor for Michigan State University working with pre-service teachers monitoring their internships in various local school districts. Patricia has a Bachelor of Science in Geography/Geology and a Master of Science in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin - Superior. She and her husband and their canine pals reside in the Eaton Rapids area.

Jerry May
“Salve,” from Gerald May, aka Dominus Maius (Mr. May to his MVS Latin students). Jerry retired in 2005 after teaching high school Latin and English for 38 years. He has been teaching the MVS Latin 1, 2 and 3 courses since the day he retired. Jerry majored in Latin and English at the undergraduate level and has a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. He lives with his wife on a 50-acre farm near St. Clair. They are the proud parents of three sons. Jerry spends every non-winter day tending to an acre of gardens surrounding his 150-plus year old Greek revival farmhouse.

Judith Medlin
Judith Medlin has been teaching career planning and psychology classes for MVS since 2003. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan, majoring in English with a Social Studies minor with an emphasis on sociology/psychology. Judith earned a Secondary Teaching Certificate Master of Arts in Counseling at Michigan State University with K-12 certification endorsement. Judith taught high school English for 18 years and was a high school counselor, AP Coordinator and the Director of Guidance for 15 years. Since retiring in 2005, she has enjoyed keeping in touch with students and the field of education through her work at MVS.

Jacqueline Mitchell
Jacqueline Mitchell, instructor and content specialist, has been with Michigan Virtual University since 2008. She teaches math and science courses and has recently started helping with science course revisions. Prior to working at MVU, she taught secondary math and science in a live classroom for eight years. Her other job is raising four children at her home in Western Michigan. Jacqueline's favorite part about MVS is communicating online with the students, helping them to experience new ways of learning.

JoDean Mogg-Snyder
JoDean Mogg-Snyder has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2008 teaching Health MMC ABS. In 2009 she began teaching Psychology A and B, also. She has taught in Michigan public schools for 22 years at both the middle school and high school levels. JoDean graduated from Central Michigan University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree. She also attended Michigan State University earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. In 2006, JoDean earned a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. In her spare time JoDean enjoys time with her family, sports, the beach, shopping and reading.

Kathy Morris
Kathy Morris has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2001. She has served as a regional ambassador for MVS and continues to promote the growth of online learning in the region. Kathy has developed courses for Michigan Virtual School and currently teaches Employability Skills. She is also a business teacher at Superior Central Schools in the Upper Peninsula. She is the online supervisor and mentor teacher for Superior Central students supervising over 50 courses per semester.

Rebecca Mulrooney
Rebecca Mulrooney is a math instructor for the Michigan Virtual School. She currently teaches middle school mathematics and science, and has previously taught Algebra I and II and Geometry at a local high school. Rebecca earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering, an MBA and a Master of Arts in Teaching with certifications in Secondary Mathematics and Science, all from the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Rebecca says she is very excited to teach online for Michigan Virtual School. She lives in Commerce Township with her husband and three children.

Elisha Murphy
Elisha Murphy, Michigan Virtual School mathematics instructor and mathematics department chair, has been with MVS since 2005. She has both taught and developed MVS mathematics courses. Before joining Michigan Virtual School, Murphy worked with both the Grosse Pointe and Troy public schools systems. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education from Western Michigan University and an Master of Public Administration degree in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan.

Chandra Nielson
Chandra Nielson is a 2002 graduate of Michigan State University with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry and completed her teaching certificate in 2003. Chandra has an extensive research background in the areas of animal health and chemistry. During college she worked at the MSU Large Animal Clinic and many MSU farms. Following college, she was hired by MBI International in the area of Industrial Biotechnology, which refers to the production of fuels, chemicals, polymers, proteins and other materials from renewable resources. Chandra also is an assistant manager at a boarding facility in Williamston. She has been involved in 4-H for over 18 years.

Xandra Oney-Raad
Xandra Oney-Raad, instructor, Michigan Virtual School and Michigan LearnPort, has been with Michigan Virtual University since 2005. She teaches Middle School Language Arts - 6, 7, 8 and is the Section 2 instructor for AP English Language and Composition, American Film Survey and Directors of the Golden Age. Betty Ong
Betty Ong, MVS teacher of MS Office programs, has been with Michigan Virtual School since its inception. She has taught online business and information management programs, developed course curriculum, and continues to provide instruction in Microsoft Applications. Prior to joining Michigan Virtual School, she taught business education and technology integration at the high school level. She is currently a media specialist at two secondary schools in Oakland County.

Frederick Page
Frederick Page teaches the Astronomy course for Michigan Virtual School. He taught astronomy at Northwestern High School in Detroit for 36 years. He has also taught biology, physical science, chemistry, adult education and earth science. Frederick was the Planetarium Director for Detroit Public Schools and provided field trips, along with peer teaching in astronomical topics, for all students in the district. He was honored in 1990 with the Michigan Science and Technology Honor Roll, and in 2002 was presented the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

Kristi Peacock has been teaching for Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She currently teaches AP Computer Science, HTML Web Design, Basic Applications, Study Skills and Employability Skills. In over 20 years of teaching in Michigan, Kristi has taught everything from basic computer skills for kindergartners to computer programming at the junior college level. She received a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and continued her education at both Spring Arbor University and Lake Superior State University. Kristi believes the MVS program provides an awesome venue for its students.

Holly Rupprecht has been teaching for Michigan Virtual School since 2003. She received a Bachelor of Science from the Alma College, majoring in Biology and Natural Science, with a minor in Math. She received her Master’s form MSU in Science Curriculum and her Specialists Degree from Nova Southeastern University in Technology Management and Administration. Holly has over 30 years in education and enjoys the challenges of teaching in both the online and face-to-face classrooms. She is currently serving as the Science Department Chair for MVS.

Megan Schrauben
Megan Schrauben’s teaching and coaching experiences cover a multitude of ages and subjects. As a physicist she held research positions at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, Fermilab near Chicago, and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU, and she taught for two summers in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She taught high school for six years before moving to her current position as Director of the Mathematics and Science Center in Jackson County. Megan earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics Education from the University of Michigan and a Master of Applied Science from Michigan Technological University.

Gary Shea
Gary Shea has been teaching AP Psychology in a classroom for since 2004 and online for Michigan Virtual School since 2008. Gary finds psychology an endlessly fascinating subject – in part because it is a relatively new science and so much of human thinking and behavior is still open to scientific investigation. He has degrees from Michigan State University and Oakland University in education and history. Gary is also a regular reader of AP Exam essays.

Theresa Soloman
Theresa Soloman has taught anatomy for the Michigan Virtual School since 2004. She retired from the public school system after teaching science for over 30 years. Theresa has a Bachelor of Science degree and in 2006 obtained a master’s in geoscience. She also has taken classes online which helped prepare her to teach online. She has found online courses to be extremely challenging and that communication with online instructors was much better than in face-to-face classes. Theresa hopes that students taking her online course will come to the realization that learning should be self-directed and extend over the lifetime of an individual.

Julia Swartz
Julia Swartz has been teaching English for Michigan Virtual School since 2002. She also has developed courses and directed the development of other courses. Julia has served as the department chair at a public school and for MVS. She has presented for MVS and for SAS Curriculum Pathways at state and national conventions. Julia holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction. She spent 37 years teaching English and computer applications in a small mid-Michigan high school and the last five years serving as curriculum director.

Abigail Tanner
Abigail Tanner has been teaching for Michigan Virtual School since 2007 and has taught Global Issues and U.S. History to both high school and middle school students. In addition to teaching for MVS, she also teaches World History, U.S. History and AP U.S. History at Northwest High School in Jackson. At Northwest she also serves as the Social Studies Department Chair, Link Crew Advisor, School Improvement Team member and Middle School track coach. Abigail enjoys finding new ways to incorporate technology into her face-to face-classroom, as well as in her online courses. She earned a Bachelor of Science in History from Central Michigan University in 2004, where she also earned a teaching certificate in history and geography. Abigail continued her education at Central Michigan University, completing a Master of Arts in Education in 2007.

Deborah Lois Taylor has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2004. She teaches Life Skills courses including Career Planning and Study Skills. She had a 43-year career with the Detroit Public Schools beginning as a student assistant in the Audio Visual Teaching Aids Library in her college freshmen year. Deborah served 38 years as a Library Media Specialist and Language Arts Teacher finally retiring in 2009. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and a Master of Science in Library Science at Wayne State University.

Robert Theisen
Robert Theisen has been teaching various social studies courses in Michigan public schools since 1974. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1971, and earned a Master of Arts degree from Wayne State University in 1976. In his classes, self-sufficiency and responsibility are emphasized; students need to analyze the situation, pose possible solutions and implement them. Robert defines his role as helping students through this process with guided instruction, modeling of expertise and corrective solutions. He believes that students learn best by doing.

Krista Tomaselli, English instructor, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2009. Prior to working for MVS, she taught high school English for six years in a traditional school setting. Krista has also taught college-level English and reading for the past three years for several colleges and universities. Krista earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Eastern Michigan University. Later, she went on to earn her Master of Arts in Reading also from Eastern Michigan University. Currently, she is certified to teach K-12 reading and 7-12 English and sociology.

Andrew Vanden Heuvel
Andrew Vanden Heuvel is a physics and mathematics instructor with a master’s degree in astrophysics. As a former research astronomer, Andrew has a variety of unique experiences that he brings to his online classes. He has discovered five asteroids and an extra-solar planet, flown onboard a zero-gravity research plane and was recently considered a highly-qualified applicant for the 2009 astronaut selection cycle. Andrew is an Endeavor Science Teaching Fellow and NASA Solar System Educator. He is an avid photographer, a former pilot and the youngest of five boys.

Sarah Waterstadt
Sarah Waterstadt has been teaching Computer Programming C++ for MVS since her public school retirement in 2004 after 26 years in teaching. When she was asked to develop online courses, she was delighted to find that she could enjoy the privileges of retirement and still work with students. Sarah has two degrees from Eastern Michigan University, a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. She taught high school mathematics her first few years of teaching, and then began taking computer courses and switched over to teaching various programming classes, office and computer repair. Sarah enjoys her nine grandchildren, traveling, crafting, decorating cakes and working with computers.

Patricia West
Patricia West began teaching for Michigan Virtual School in 2003, and has taught several courses in the English department including Beginning Composition, American Literature and British Literature. When MVS changed its courses to meet the Michigan Merit Curriculum standards, she developed the current British Literature course. Patricia graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in English. Before working for MVS, she taught English for Grand Rapids Public Schools and coached both girls and boys varsity tennis teams for local high schools. Patricia and her husband live in Siesta Key, Florida, during the winter months and return to Michigan in the spring.

Anne Williston thoroughly enjoys teaching business courses for Michigan Virtual School. In addition, she teaches English for Western Options High School in Jackson, Michigan. Anne received her Master of Education in Alternative Education from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 2008. She completed the requirements for English and Business Secondary Education at Olivet College in 2003. Anne also has a Bachelor of Science in Library Science with a Business Administration minor from Illinois State University in 1981.

Amy Anderson
Amy Anderson teaches German at Michigan Virtual School and Montcalm Community College. She started learning German as a high school freshman when she babysat for an Austrian family in her neighborhood. She won a scholarship in high school to travel to Germany through the American Association of Teachers of German. Amy pursued German as a major at Hope College in Holland, and traveled to Vienna, Austria, for the Vienna Summer School Program. She spent a year interning and studying in Germany under the Congress-Bundestag Scholarship from 2002-2003. After completing teacher certification at Grand Valley State University, Amy achieved advanced German proficiency on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview.

Michelle Bauman
Michelle Bauman, Music Education Specialist, has been with MVS since the launch of its first music course in 2007. She has taught music in the Southwest Michigan area for over 25 years and for the last nine years has served as the Choral Director for the Kalamazoo Valley Community Chorus. She also has served as a national music consultant for McGraw-Hill Educational Publishers and has been a curriculum reviewer and creator of new and existing music curriculum. Michelle earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Spring Arbor University and Master of Arts from VanderCook College of Music.

Tara Becker-Utess
Tara Becker-Utess has been teaching at Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She teaches Personal Finance, Math Skills, Legal Issues and Pre-Algebra. Tara is also in her fifth year of teaching social studies and mathematics at Charlotte High School. She coaches junior varsity volleyball and runs the Harvard Model Congress and Freshmen Mentoring Program. Tara graduated from Western Michigan University in 2005 with a degree in Secondary Education. Reading has been a life-long passion for Mary Bullard. She has taught Reading and Study Skills at Michigan Virtual School since 2000. She began her career as a Young Adult Librarian in a public library. Mary now works part-time at a local community college as Reference Librarian and Special Needs tutor. For the past 14 years she has been the Library Media Specialist at a large high school in southeast Michigan. She earned her undergraduate degree and teaching credentials at Alma College. Mary has a Master of Library Science degree from University of Michigan and a Master of Reading from Eastern Michigan University. She has also taken technology classes from Michigan State University.

Kristi Bush has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2000. Kristi serves as an online instructor trainer, course developer and mentor. Sandra Cade
Born in Chicago, Sandra Cade has lived and traveled extensively in the U.S., as well as parts of Europe and Latin America. On most of her international trips she accompanied teenagers on their first experiences of a world beyond the boundaries of their home communities. Synchronous class sessions among advanced language students from across Michigan provide opportunities for conversations in a shared new language about topics raised in course readings, audiocasts, and videos. “Listening to and encouraging the growth of ideas is very exciting and being able to chat virtually with my students from the comfort of our own homes is a special treat,” Sandra says.

After earning a master’s degree in counseling, she worked as a high school counselor for eight years. Theresa Daly Commean
Theresa Daly Commean started teaching at Michigan Virtual School in 2009. She graduated from Trinity University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management and went on to become an interpreter for the deaf. She received her master’s degree in Education at Stetson University in 2007. Theresa began the American Sign Language program at Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, in 2000 and has been teaching at Seminole for the past 10 years. She is currently teaching American Sign Language 1A and 1B for MVS.

Louise (Lee) DeTolve has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2002. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Education from University of Illinois and a Master of Arts in Educational Technology Curriculum from Governors State University. Originally a member of the math department, Lee currently teaches Digital Photography Editing and Flash Animation. Prior to joining Michigan Virtual School’s staff, Lee taught geometry and was a technology coordinator in Kalamazoo. Before moving to Michigan in 1994, she taught advanced middle school mathematics in Illinois.

Annette Gleason
Annette Gleason has taught math for four years at Gwinn High School. A few years ago she decided to become a stay-at-home mom but still coaches junior varsity volleyball at Gwinn. Annette loves being outside in the summer so she walks the Lake Superior shoreline, hikes large bluffs and plays softball. Most of her spare time is spent with her husband three children in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Shannon Hancock lives in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she teaches in a face-to-face classroom at a small school. Shannon has taught in a regular classroom, a prison, and at Northern Michigan University. Shannon loves teaching and loves being able to connect with students across the state by teaching online classes. She think that the opportunities online learning brings to our students are endless. Shannon is married and has three children, one boy and two girls.

Elaine Hill
Elaine Hill, middle school science instructor, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2005, teaching all levels and disciplines of middle school science as well as developing classes. She was also an instructor for MVS summer and after-school online Science Camps. Elaine attended Space Camp for Teachers at Cape Canaveral, Florida, which helped her gain an insight into astronaut training. She received her degree from Western Michigan University and has highly-qualified status in the teaching of science. Elaine brings to MVS over 30 years of experience teaching science to middle school students both online and in face-to-face classrooms.

J.R. Hill
J.R. Hill has been a mathematics instructor with Michigan Virtual School since 2004. He currently teaches Algebra 1 and Mathematics of Baseball. In the past J.R. has taught Algebra 2, Geometry, Math Skills, Pre-Calculus and Trigonometry. He has also served as the mathematics department head and helped develop many math online courses. J.R currently works at Clinton Middle School teaching seventh-grade math. He also teaches two engineering courses at Clinton Middle School through Project Lead the Way. J.R. has also coached varsity basketball, junior varsity baseball and varsity baseball. Prior to coaching high school, he was a college baseball coach with Siena Heights University, where he played four years of college baseball. J.R. has also volunteered for the American Cancer Society, Lymphoma and Leukemia Society and Catholic Social Services. He is married and has three children.

John Hill, high school history instructor, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2002, developing and teaching American History and Native-American History classes. John holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary social studies from Wayne State University and a master’s degree in history from Oakland University. In addition to teaching American and World History in a face-to-face classroom, he was involved in coaching high school and middle school sports such as basketball, baseball and football for a number of years. John has also worked as an Industrial Engineer for General Motors Corporation where he developed and taught classes at GM Plants worldwide for General Motors University.

Nancy Jayne has been teaching and designing courses with Michigan Virtual School since 2005. She has taught Statistics, AP Statistics, Health Education A, Health Education B and Health Education MMC. Outside of cyberspace, Nancy had taught mathematics for four years prior to earning her master’s degree in School Counseling and moving into her current position as the counselor for a high school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Chris Kaiser
Chris Kaiser, instructor, course developer and chairperson of the social studies department, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2001 and was among the first cohort of online instructors. He currently teaches World Civilizations, World History and Geography, and Advanced Placement U.S. History. A veteran public school teacher of over 11 years, Chris earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Michigan State University, a master’s in Education from Aquinas College and is currently a doctoral student at Michigan State University with research interests in global education, the teaching and learning of history, and pre-service teacher education.

Sue Kanitz
Sue Kanitz has been teaching French with Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She is also a veteran staff member of Milan High School, where she has taught French and English for the past 25 years. Along with her teaching duties, Sue has been the school’s Student Council adviser for several years, has served as department chair and has accompanied students to Europe on several occasions. Sue earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Eastern Michigan University.

Andrea Kistler
“Guten Tag!” Andrea Kistler, also known as “Frau” Kistler in her German courses, has been teaching both German and Spanish for Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She has taught German and Spanish at Gladwin Community Schools since 1998. Prior to beginning her teaching career, Andrea lived in Germany for three years. Andrea graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts in German, Spanish and Marketing, and later earned a secondary teaching certificate from Saginaw Valley State University. She recently completed a Master of Science degree in in International Relations from Troy University and holds a certificate in Distance Education from Indiana University. Andrea is originally from Mt. Pleasant, but currently lives in Gladwin with my husband, son and daughter, as well as three dogs.

Amy Kotsch
Amy Kotsch, English and business education instructor, as been a Michigan-certified 7-12 educator since 1996 and a Michigan Virtual School instructor since 2003. She is the lead instructor for English 10A, English 10B and Beginning Composition courses, and a second section instructor for Employability Skills. In addition to being a member of the MVS team, Amy teaches English and computer courses at a small school in Michigan’s Thumb. Amy graduated from Central Michigan University in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in English, Business Education, and Recreation. In 2002 she earned a master’s degree in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University.

Jim Koyish
Jim Koyish has been involved with the Michigan Virtual School since 2002. While an adjunct online instructor, he has also taught in the face-to-face classroom in the Belding, Grant, Fremont and Holton school districts in West Michigan. Prior to working as a full-time K-12 educator, Jim was a supervisor and manager in the automotive, furniture and food processing industry. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, a Master of Arts in Career & Technical Education, and a Graduate Certificate in Educational Technology from Western Michigan University. He earned his Secondary Professional Teaching endorsements in IX Industrial Technology and English.

Christine Ladner
Christine Ladner has taught Japanese at Michigan Virtual School since the course’s inception in 2008. Prior to teaching, she managed a translation company and worked in web and graphics fields in England, Germany and the U.S. Christine graduated from Baylor University in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Political Science and did an exchange program in Japan for one year. In 1998 she earned her master’s degree in Journalism and Japanese from the University of Michigan and her Teaching Certification in Japanese Language and Political Science from Eastern Michigan University. She has taught Japanese at the K-12 level, both face to face and online.

Debra Lynch
Debra Lynch joined Michigan Virtual University in January 2010. For the past 25 years, she has taught Business and Technology courses at the high school level and serves as the Work Based Learning Coordinator. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree from Central Michigan University. She is also an adjunct faculty member at Baker College teaching in the Business and Office Administration Department. Debra lives with her husband, Jeff, and has two kids who attend Central Michigan University. She enjoys reading, traveling, scrapbooking and spending the summers up north with her family.

Patricia Maldonado
Patricia Maldonado’s involvement with Michigan Virtual School began in 2009. She currently teaches the Fast Track credit recovery Biology/Earth Science/Forensic Science courses and AP Biology. Prior to working with MVS, Patricia taught Earth Science for 11 years at Gardner Junior High and AP Environmental/Biology for 22 years at Eastern High School in Lansing. After retiring from the Lansing Public Schools, she took a position as a field instructor for Michigan State University working with pre-service teachers monitoring their internships in various local school districts. Patricia has a Bachelor of Science in Geography/Geology and a Master of Science in Teaching from the University of Wisconsin - Superior. She and her husband and their canine pals reside in the Eaton Rapids area.

Jerry May
“Salve,” from Gerald May, aka Dominus Maius (Mr. May to his MVS Latin students). Jerry retired in 2005 after teaching high school Latin and English for 38 years. He has been teaching the MVS Latin 1, 2 and 3 courses since the day he retired. Jerry majored in Latin and English at the undergraduate level and has a master’s degree in guidance and counseling. He lives with his wife on a 50-acre farm near St. Clair. They are the proud parents of three sons. Jerry spends every non-winter day tending to an acre of gardens surrounding his 150-plus year old Greek revival farmhouse.

Judith Medlin
Judith Medlin has been teaching career planning and psychology classes for MVS since 2003. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan, majoring in English with a Social Studies minor with an emphasis on sociology/psychology. Judith earned a Secondary Teaching Certificate Master of Arts in Counseling at Michigan State University with K-12 certification endorsement. Judith taught high school English for 18 years and was a high school counselor, AP Coordinator and the Director of Guidance for 15 years. Since retiring in 2005, she has enjoyed keeping in touch with students and the field of education through her work at MVS.

Jacqueline Mitchell
Jacqueline Mitchell, instructor and content specialist, has been with Michigan Virtual University since 2008. She teaches math and science courses and has recently started helping with science course revisions. Prior to working at MVU, she taught secondary math and science in a live classroom for eight years. Her other job is raising four children at her home in Western Michigan. Jacqueline's favorite part about MVS is communicating online with the students, helping them to experience new ways of learning.

JoDean Mogg-Snyder has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2008 teaching Health MMC ABS. In 2009 she began teaching Psychology A and B, also. She has taught in Michigan public schools for 22 years at both the middle school and high school levels. JoDean graduated from Central Michigan University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree. She also attended Michigan State University earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. In 2006, JoDean earned a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching from Marygrove College. In her spare time JoDean enjoys time with her family, sports, the beach, shopping and reading.

Kathy Morris
Kathy Morris has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2001. She has served as a regional ambassador for MVS and continues to promote the growth of online learning in the region. Kathy has developed courses for Michigan Virtual School and currently teaches Employability Skills. She is also a business teacher at Superior Central Schools in the Upper Peninsula. Rebecca Mulrooney
Rebecca Mulrooney is a math instructor for the Michigan Virtual School. She currently teaches middle school mathematics and science, and has previously taught Algebra I and II and Geometry at a local high school. Rebecca earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering, an MBA and a Master of Arts in Teaching with certifications in Secondary Mathematics and Science, all from the University of Michigan – Dearborn. Elisha Murphy
Elisha Murphy, Michigan Virtual School mathematics instructor and mathematics department chair, has been with MVS since 2005. She has both taught and developed MVS mathematics courses. Before joining Michigan Virtual School, Murphy worked with both the Grosse Pointe and Troy public schools systems. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education from Western Michigan University and an Master of Public Administration degree in Educational Administration from the University of Michigan.

Chandra Nielson
Chandra Nielson is a 2002 graduate of Michigan State University with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry and completed her teaching certificate in 2003. Chandra has an extensive research background in the areas of animal health and chemistry. During college she worked at the MSU Large Animal Clinic and many MSU farms. Following college, she was hired by MBI International in the area of Industrial Biotechnology, which refers to the production of fuels, chemicals, polymers, proteins and other materials from renewable resources. Chandra also is an assistant manager at a boarding facility in Williamston. She has been involved in 4-H for over 18 years.

Betty Ong, MVS teacher of MS Office programs, has been with Michigan Virtual School since its inception. Frederick Page
Frederick Page teaches the Astronomy course for Michigan Virtual School. He taught astronomy at Northwestern High School in Detroit for 36 years. He has also taught biology, physical science, chemistry, adult education and earth science. Frederick was the Planetarium Director for Detroit Public Schools and provided field trips, along with peer teaching in astronomical topics, for all students in the district. He was honored in 1990 with the Michigan Science and Technology Honor Roll, and in 2002 was presented the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching.

Kristi Peacock has been teaching for Michigan Virtual School since 2008. She currently teaches AP Computer Science, HTML Web Design, Basic Applications, Study Skills and Employability Skills. In over 20 years of teaching in Michigan, Kristi has taught everything from basic computer skills for kindergartners to computer programming at the junior college level. She received a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and continued her education at both Spring Arbor University and Lake Superior State University. Megan Schrauben
Megan Schrauben’s teaching and coaching experiences cover a multitude of ages and subjects. As a physicist she held research positions at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, Fermilab near Chicago, and the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at MSU, and she taught for two summers in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She taught high school for six years before moving to her current position as Director of the Mathematics and Science Center in Jackson County. Megan earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics Education from the University of Michigan and a Master of Applied Science from Michigan Technological University.

Gary Shea
Gary Shea has been teaching AP Psychology in a classroom for since 2004 and online for Michigan Virtual School since 2008. Gary finds psychology an endlessly fascinating subject – in part because it is a relatively new science and so much of human thinking and behavior is still open to scientific investigation. He has degrees from Michigan State University and Oakland University in education and history. Gary is also a regular reader of AP Exam essays.

Theresa Soloman
Theresa Soloman has taught anatomy for the Michigan Virtual School since 2004. She retired from the public school system after teaching science for over 30 years. Theresa has a Bachelor of Science degree and in 2006 obtained a master’s in geoscience. She also has taken classes online which helped prepare her to teach online. She has found online courses to be extremely challenging and that communication with online instructors was much better than in face-to-face classes. Theresa hopes that students taking her online course will come to the realization that learning should be self-directed and extend over the lifetime of an individual.

Julia Swartz
Julia Swartz has been teaching English for Michigan Virtual School since 2002. She also has developed courses and directed the development of other courses. Julia has served as the department chair at a public school and for MVS. She has presented for MVS and for SAS Curriculum Pathways at state and national conventions. Julia holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction. She spent 37 years teaching English and computer applications in a small mid-Michigan high school and the last five years serving as curriculum director.

Abigail Tanner
Abigail Tanner has been teaching for Michigan Virtual School since 2007 and has taught Global Issues and U.S. History to both high school and middle school students. In addition to teaching for MVS, she also teaches World History, U.S. History and AP U.S. History at Northwest High School in Jackson. At Northwest she also serves as the Social Studies Department Chair, Link Crew Advisor, School Improvement Team member and Middle School track coach. Abigail enjoys finding new ways to incorporate technology into her face-to face-classroom, as well as in her online courses. She earned a Bachelor of Science in History from Central Michigan University in 2004, where she also earned a teaching certificate in history and geography. Abigail continued her education at Central Michigan University, completing a Master of Arts in Education in 2007.

Deborah Lois Taylor has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2004. She teaches Life Skills courses including Career Planning and Study Skills. She had a 43-year career with the Detroit Public Schools beginning as a student assistant in the Audio Visual Teaching Aids Library in her college freshmen year. Deborah served 38 years as a Library Media Specialist and Language Arts Teacher finally retiring in 2009. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and a Master of Science in Library Science at Wayne State University.

Robert Theisen
Robert Theisen has been teaching various social studies courses in Michigan public schools since 1974. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1971, and earned a Master of Arts degree from Wayne State University in 1976. In his classes, self-sufficiency and responsibility are emphasized; students need to analyze the situation, pose possible solutions and implement them. Robert defines his role as helping students through this process with guided instruction, modeling of expertise and corrective solutions. He believes that students learn best by doing.

Krista Tomaselli, English instructor, has been with Michigan Virtual School since 2009. Prior to working for MVS, she taught high school English for six years in a traditional school setting. Krista has also taught college-level English and reading for the past three years for several colleges and universities. Krista earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Eastern Michigan University. Later, she went on to earn her Master of Arts in Reading also from Eastern Michigan University. Currently, she is certified to teach K-12 reading and 7-12 English and sociology.

Andrew Vanden Heuvel
Andrew Vanden Heuvel is a physics and mathematics instructor with a master’s degree in astrophysics. As a former research astronomer, Andrew has a variety of unique experiences that he brings to his online classes. He has discovered five asteroids and an extra-solar planet, flown onboard a zero-gravity research plane and was recently considered a highly-qualified applicant for the 2009 astronaut selection cycle. Andrew is an Endeavor Science Teaching Fellow and NASA Solar System Educator. He is an avid photographer, a former pilot and the youngest of five boys.

Sarah Waterstadt
Sarah Waterstadt has been teaching Computer Programming C++ for MVS since her public school retirement in 2004 after 26 years in teaching. When she was asked to develop online courses, she was delighted to find that she could enjoy the privileges of retirement and still work with students. Sarah has two degrees from Eastern Michigan University, a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. She taught high school mathematics her first few years of teaching, and then began taking computer courses and switched over to teaching various programming classes, office and computer repair. Sarah enjoys her nine grandchildren, traveling, crafting, decorating cakes and working with computers.

Patricia West
Patricia West began teaching for Michigan Virtual School in 2003, and has taught several courses in the English department including Beginning Composition, American Literature and British Literature. When MVS changed its courses to meet the Michigan Merit Curriculum standards, she developed the current British Literature course. Patricia graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in English. Before working for MVS, she taught English for Grand Rapids Public Schools and coached both girls and boys varsity tennis teams for local high schools. Patricia and her husband live in Siesta Key, Florida, during the winter months and return to Michigan in the spring.

Anne Williston thoroughly enjoys teaching business courses for Michigan Virtual School. In addition, she teaches English for Western Options High School in Jackson, Michigan. Anne received her Master of Education in Alternative Education from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 2008. She completed the requirements for English and Business Secondary Education at Olivet College in 2003. Anne also has a Bachelor of Science in Library Science with a Business Administration minor from Illinois State University in 1981.
