Learning online is challenging and fun
Online learning, with a whole new set of tools available, thanks to technology and the Internet, makes learning fast and fun. Online learning features such things as streaming audio and video, computer animations, email, newsgroups, chat rooms, bulletin boards, digital portfolios and more.
With online learning, you can learn individually or as part of a class, in real time with the instructor and other students or whenever you choose, in a computer lab or classroom, or with a laptop computer under a shady tree.
Courses to fit your learning style
The course catalog contains three course styles for high school students: Flex (Instructor-led), Pilot (Instructor-supported) and Student Direct (Instructor-less).
Flex courses are offered in both semester and trimester length. Students work at their own pace; the enrollment date is flexible but the end date is fixed. Six of the seven World Languages offered by MVS are Flex style courses: American Sign Language, French, German, Japanese, Latin and Spanish, and are offered in the semester, trimester and summer sessions. Chinese is only offered as a semester course and is not available in the summer. If you like to move quickly through a course our Flex Fast Track courses are for you. You’ll cover the same content, but in a shorter amount of time – six weeks.
Five Pilot courses are available in the Instructor-supported course delivery model this fall. The instructor role in support of the new delivery model will be reduced to emphasize response to student initiated contact on content.
Student Direct courses are available anytime throughout the year. Students are expected to complete the course in four months. Each Student Direct session has a set end date. The interactive instruction is available completely online – no textbooks. You can take Student Direct courses from anywhere you have a computer and Internet access.
MVS also offers online Advanced Placement courses that are just as challenging as traditional AP classes and also prepare you for the College Board exams.
Michigan Merit Curriculum
Beginning with the Class of 2011, the State of Michigan enacted rigorous high school graduation requirements (PDF). Content expectations were developed for each course required for graduation. All MVS course designated as MMC were developed to meet those expectations.
