Courses in a variety of styles for
high school and middle school students

The number of courses and course styles offered by Michigan Virtual School provide high school and middle school students with a variety of options.

The course catalog contains three course styles for high school students: Flex (Instructor-led), which includes Advanced Placement and Fast Track (six-week courses); Pilot (Instructor-supported); and Student Direct (Instructor-less). All three styles are offered during the regular school year, while Flex and Student Direct are also offered in the MVS summer session.

Included in the list of high school courses are 36 Michigan Merit Curriculum courses. These courses, designated by “MMC” in the course catalog, meet the standards set by the state for all students beginning with the high school graduating class of 2011.

Course Styles:

  • Flex courses are self-paced courses that offer great flexibility, along with a Michigan-certified teacher who guides students through each course.
  • The new Pilot courses are Instructor-supported courses that provide an instructor to answer students questions. All assignments and assessments are auto scored.
  • In Student Direct courses, students are expected to complete the course by the end date. The Student Direct instructor’s role is limited to resetting tests and recording the final score only.

Middle school courses are in the semester format and range from American History to World Cultures. Middle school courses are not available in the summer.

MVS courses are available at a cost per seat or reduced price for volume purchasing. Price breaks are available at 10, 100 and 300 or more purchased seats. MVS course seats do not expire, so the seats can be used in future enrollments.
