Mentor FAQs

Q What is an onsite mentor teacher?
A
The Michigan Department of Education (PDF) stipulates that every student taking a virtual course must have an onsite mentor teacher who acts as the student’s teacher of record. You must be a registered teacher (although not necessarily teaching a class) who works for the school. You do not have to be an expert in the subject of the student’s virtual course. You’ll be an advocate for the student and the liaison between the student, the school, the online instructor and parents. Mentors keep track of the student’s course work and submit grades based on the student’s percentage score in the course.

Q How can I become an onsite mentor teacher?
A
Talk to your school’s principal to express your interest in this important role. Your designated school administrator will register you on the MVS site and your school's designated counselor(s) will assign students to you when they are enrolled.
