Parent/Mentor Guide – Student Direct, Summer 2011

Message to Parents/Mentors
Thank you for taking the time to work with your students to help them be successful in these courses. This guide will provide some tips to help your students complete the courses.

  1. Provide a place for your student to login to their course every day.
    1. Arrange access to high speed Internet or a location that has Internet (library, etc.).
    2. Students need to login and work every day – avoid procrastination!
    3. Set up a schedule so your student knows when to spend two hours a day (5-10 hours a week) on each course.
    4. Consider setting up a contract with your student to define hours and progress.
  1. Parent/mentors will receive an email with login information to monitor student progress.
  1. There is a pacing guide that will help students with time management and pacing, and will display green when the student is completing assignments in order.
    1. Students can complete class work earlier than August 15.
    2. Courses MUST BE FINISHED by August 15 in order to qualify for the gift card.
    3. Students and parents/mentors can click on Reports to view course activity/progress. Your school may request you or the student send weekly reports.
    4. Go over course progress with your student each week.

How Student Direct Courses Work

  • Each unit includes study guides to be completed by students. Print the study guides and problems for practice while reviewing content. Students report that this helps them learn the content and on quizzes and tests.
    • Use a binder to keep the study guides organized.
    • Students may take notes in a spiral notebook instead of printing the guides.
  • There is an audio option to have course content read aloud; ear buds or headsets are recommended.
  • Tests are open book, open note.
  • Unit quizzes and tests are set to 70% mastery.
    • Students can attempt a quiz and, after two tries, the test is blocked and must be manually unlocked by contacting the MVU Help Desk at 888-889-2840.
    • MVU Help Desk Hours are: M – F from 7 a.m. to 12 midnight, Sunday 5 p.m. to 12 midnight.
  • To take the final exam earlier than the last date of the class, call the MVU Help Desk to reset the end date to the desired exam date.
  • Shortly after August 15, scores will be entered into CEMS and the completion certificate will be available so you can provide it to your school. Instructions for viewing/printing/saving the final score certificate are located at www.mivhs.org/mentor, Student Information/Final Score.
