Teacher FAQs

Q How can my school benefit from MVS courses?
A
Online learning expands learning options for students, teaches 21st century learning skills, helps make learning relevant, is proven effective and gives educators new ways to reach students. For teachers, MVS provides a chance for supplemental income (if you teach and/or develop an online course for MVS) and tools to help in the classroom.

Q Is MVS competing with my school?
A
No, MVS works in partnership with schools and teachers, not in competition. We provide online learning options that supplement, not replace, what is currently being offered at the school. MVS does not directly grant credit or diplomas to students. Credit comes from your school and counts toward a student's diploma, granted by your school.

Q Can I feel comfortable about recommending MVS courses?
A
Yes, we develop courses in partnership with Michigan teachers that meet the Michigan Merit Curriculum and national standards. We also license courses and/or content from high-quality providers like the Confucius Institute at Michigan State University, powerspeaK12, Apex Learning, PLATO (Student Direct courses), Florida Virtual and the Monterey Institute’s National Repository of Online Courses. All our courses meet state and/or national standards.

Q What are the technical requirements for MVS offerings?
A
A computer and fast, reliable Internet connection are basic technical requirements for taking MVS courses. Individual courses require specific technical requirements.

Q What is a mentor?
A
The Michigan Department of Education (PDF) stipulates that every student taking an online course must have an onsite mentor who acts as the student’s teacher of record. Mentors must be highly-qualified, Michigan-certified teachers (although not necessarily teaching a class) who work for the school. Mentors do not have to be highly qualified in the course in which they are mentoring. As a mentor, you’ll be an advocate for the student and the liaison between the student, the school, the online instructor and parents. Mentors keep track of the student’s course work and submit grades based on the student’s percentage score in the course. Visit the Mentor Resources page for additional information.

Q How do I become an online teacher?
A
MVS posts job openings on Jobs @ MVU. Highly qualified, Michigan-certified teachers who apply for open positions are invited to participate in an Online Instructor Training course. The course consists of one face-to-face meeting and four weeks of online learning.
