Michigan Virtual School was first awarded accreditation in December 2005 by the Commission on International and Trans-regional Accreditation (CITA), and re-accredited in 2010 and 2016. Until recently, CITA was an accrediting authority in the U.S. and throughout the world and was an alliance of the premier American accrediting associations, including the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA) which accredited schools in 19 states, including Michigan.
In 2009, AdvancED acquired CITA and now supports all its institutions. AdvancED is the world’s largest education community, representing 27,000 public and private schools and districts across the United States and in 65 countries worldwide and educating 15 million students. AdvancED also is the parent organization of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI).
Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance granted to educational institutions upon successful completion of a lengthy evaluation process, including a self-study and an on-site evaluation by a team of experienced educators. Earning accreditation from an organization like AdvancED means that the MVS online instructors, tools, services and staff meet or exceed essential standards of educational quality.
As part of a five-year accreditation cycle, MVS is required to submit interim reports and engage in a continuous improvement process that enhances student performance.
Public Act 230 of 2000 authorized implementation of the MVS. MVS does not grant course credit or award diplomas independently, but works in partnership with local and intermediate school districts which award credit or diplomas.
