Courses  > CareerForward

CareerForward ™ was created to help Michigan students understand how to plan their work lives and career opportunities amid the implications of the global economy.  This award-winning, no-cost online course is a powerful means for Michigan students to satisfy the new Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements for an online course.

The course was developed through a partnership of the Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan Virtual University to help schools and students meet Michigan's new online learning requirement for high school graduation found in Public Acts 123 & 124 of 2006. Major funding was provided by Microsoft Corporation’s U.S. Partners in Learning program. With the MVU-hosted Blackboard version, MVU is able to offer Michigan schools access under a special licensing agreement from Blackboard, Inc.

Course Description: The CareerForward course was designed to be a self-contained online learning course but it may be used in companion with a variety of online career planning tools that provide students with the opportunity to assess their career interests, explore career options and create an educational development plan.

This new Michigan Virtual School course helps students wrestle with some of the burning questions about their futures: What am I going to do with my life? What is the world of work like? What will I need to succeed? How do I match my interests with work? Using a variety of multimedia, course topics explore these questions and more.

Throughout the course, students are asked frequently to reflect on what they’re learning, to write their thoughts down as a continual refinement of their thinking and to discuss their thoughts with other students, either in-person or online. Key benefits of the course include learning about the world of work, gaining experience with online resources and satisfying the new high school graduation requirement for online learning.
